PX4 Developer Summit 2022

With increasing automation and robotization in many aspects of society, from mapping to delivery drones, reliance on accurate yet robust integrated navigation systems is increasing. Having this technology fully compatible with ecosystems as PX4 is a key element. Drones rely on GPS or GNSS, benefitting from the ubiquity of absolute accuracy and from orientation and it is important to understand its PX4 integration. GNSS, which is built on processing of external signals, is vulnerable to the influence of destroying signals (jamming) or fake signals created to mislead the GNSS receiver. This has come in the news in a spectacular experiment where a Tesla is misled to take the wrong exit from a highway. There are also increasing unfortunate reports of jamming & spoofing happening near conflict zones as seen in now in easter Europe and Scandinavia. This presentation will provide a view on the integration of GNSS with PX4 and explain how positioning/orientation can be best used within PX4, provide the background on the different errors that affect GNSS, describe the techniques in the GNSS receiver to overcome those , and illustrate how a careful choice of the right GNSS receiver can crucially contribute to the robust, accurate and specially safe performance of an integrated UAV system.
